Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Vines.

Stems: Stems twining, herbaceous to somewhat woody near base, often more than 5 m long, many-branched, appressed pubescent to glabrate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades broadly ovate, 5–9 cm long. Apex acuminate to obtuse. Base cordate. Surfaces densely pubescent, especially on lower surface, or glabrate or completely glabrous; blades membranous. Margins 3-lobed or entire. Petioles about as long as blades. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers 1 to few in cymes, usually axillary, these usually silky white pubescent, pedicels ca. 10 mm long, bracts scale-like to foliose. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic, 5-merous. Calyx of 5 sepals, distinct, imbricate, herbaceous, lanceolate to ovate, 14–23 mm long, appressed pubescent to glabrate, apex long–acuminate to acuminate, often somewhat enlarging in fruit but not markedly accrescent, persistent, occasionally accrescent. Corolla of 5 fused petals; petals blue or purple, rarely white, funnelform, 5–7 cm long, the limb 6–8 cm in diameter. Stamens 5, distinct; included or rarely exserted; filaments inserted on corolla tube base alternate with corolla lobes; anthers dithecal, usually linear or oblong, extrorse. Ovary superior, 2–4-carpellate, usually with as many cells, placentation basal or basal-axile; ovules 2(4, 6) per cell, or ovary 1-celled and ovules 4, these erect, anatropous; style 1, filiform, simple or bifid, or sometimes with 2 distinct style; stigma globose or 2–3-lobed, the lobes globose.

Fruit: Capsules brown; often 4–angled; globose or somewhat flattened apically; up to 1 cm in diameter; glabrous; dehiscent by 4 valves or rarely 6 valves; or splitting irregularly. Seeds (1–)4; tan to dark brown; rounded; 4–5 mm long; glabrous; endosperm absent or scanty; cartilaginous; cotyledons usually foliaceous.

Ploidy: 2n = 30

Habitat: Common in low elevation; dry often disturbed areas.

Elevation Range: 0–1,250 m.

USES

  • All parts as purgative; stems/leaves crushed as a poultice for wounds and sores. Juice of roots, leaves, stem and flowers used as a laxative, and in treating broken bones, used along with a kī (ti, Cordyline fruticosa) leaf to protect the skin (Abbott 1992:100).
